AI-powered alt text for
every image on the web
ALTer is a browser extension that detects images missing accessible descriptions and generates them on demand using AI — making the web more accessible, one image at a time.
Up and running in three steps
-
Install the extension
Add ALTer to Chrome from the Web Store. It runs quietly in the background and never touches images that already carry a proper description.
-
Create an account
Sign up for a free account and sign into the extension popup with your email and password — no manual steps. New users get 100 free credits (one credit per image description).
-
Browse — descriptions appear
An "ALT" badge overlays images without alt text. Click it and an AI-generated description is injected directly into the image's
altattribute, immediately readable by screen readers.
Accessibility is not optional
~20%
Images lack useful alt text
WebAIM's annual accessibility audit consistently finds that roughly one in five images on the web carries no meaningful description — a direct barrier for blind and low-vision users who rely on screen readers.

People with vision impairment
The WHO estimates 2.2 billion people globally live with some form of vision impairment. A single missing alt attribute can turn a meaningful image into a dead end.
WCAG
Success Criterion 1.1.1
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines require a text alternative for every non-decorative image. ALTer helps you meet that requirement on pages you visit, even when you don't control them.
